MY favorite French bakery, Madeleine Patisserie, is a quiet oasis on West 23rd Street near Seventh Avenue. Stopping in for Earl Grey tea with soy milk and the best raspberry Parisian macaroons in or out of Paris, I sit by the window, and watch the comings and goings on the street.

Directly in my line of sight is Visions, an institution that runs classes for the blind and visually impaired. It was outside that building that I met Zoraida Morrison, who was making her way to her weekly ceramics class.

Ms. Morrison caresses the clay with sensitivity and tenderness, mapping its terrain with an attention to detail that makes her a star student. Her latest work could have been set in Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus,” its shell-like form the perfect dwelling for any goddess of love. Ms. Morrison, a native Puerto Rican, is blind. She describes glaucoma as “the great thief of eyesight.” It stole hers when she was 26. Today, at age 45, she lives a busy New York life, experiencing the world through other senses.

For example, she taught her (sighted) fiancé, a nurse named David, how to taste flowers. She describes the heightened sensitivity of the lips and tongue and how they make possible a unique sensation, one very different from simply feeling with the fingertips. Tasting flowers is one of her favorite activities, and she thinks more people should try it.

Although Ms. Morrison has no full-time job and supports herself with disability benefits, she volunteers once a week at the American Foundation for the Blind, answering phone calls from people with questions regarding loss of sight. She says that she got over her loss of sight long ago, and she likes to help people and their families who are newly going through the experience.

“It’s a great big world out there with tons of adventures and interesting people to meet,” she says. “I don’t want to lose out on that.”
